Penny Battery

1)Question: What is a penny battery?

Answer: A penny battery is a voltaic pile of copper and zinc.

2)Question: What does a penny battery consists of?

Answer: It consists of pennies, zinc washers or shaved pennies, paper or cardboard, which has to be soaked in salt .

3)Question: How do you assemble it?

Answer: You first have to put the copper, zinc, salt and repeat the same process.


4)Question: Does it have to be pennies from a specific year?

Karen Vera

Answer: Thanks for asking, yes it does have to be from specific years, from 1982 forward.


5)Question: Is there another replacement for the salt?

Karen Vera

Answer: Yes, vinegar.


6)Question: Once you have your penny battery all assembled and ready to be tested, how can you avoid everything to come apart?

Karen Vera

Answer: You put electrical tape nicely around the entire penny battery to hold it.


7)Question: If wanted to add an LED how would you place it?

Karen Vera

Answer: Before you add electrical tape to hold all the pennies in one place, put one part of the metal string underneath and the other end on top of the penny battery, and then finally add tape to assemble it all together.


8) Question: Is there another way of lighting up  an LED?

Karen Vera

Answer: Yes, you can use wires to connect to the penny battery, a switch and the LED.


9)Question: How does it look like as a diagram with circuit symbols, in other words a schematic?
